Aunty Virus 5th July 2010
Alan via email says:
Hi Aunty. Last week Elaine asked how to write accented characters using an English keyboard. Two methods I use might be of interest to her and other readers. In Word I use "Insert/Symbol" from the menu bar, whilst if writing an email or other non Word document I use "Character Map" from ‘start’ ‘all programs’ ‘accessories’ ‘system Tools’. To make life easier when using the latter method I have created a shortcut to Character Map on my desktop. Both methods work OK without a number pad and enable a vast range of special characters as well as those with accents. Hope this may be of some help.
Aunty Says:
That is very helpful Alan and thank you ever so much for writing in.
Theresa via email asks:
Hi Aunty, can you please help? I am at the moment using dialup for my internet access and I have tried to upgrade this to broadband with Telefonica but they say that my telephone line is not suitable and has not got the right configuration. I have checked this with RTN and other suppliers who confirm this. Can you tell me the most cost affective way to get a broadband connection?
Aunty Says:
It really depends on where you are geographically Theresa. Broadband/ADSL is limited by the distance you are from the telephone exchange as the quality of the signal weakens rapidly over copper wire. You may find you can have a wireless connection, but again that will depend on where you are and how accessible the nearest transmitter is. Give Telitec a call on 965709042 and ask them to give you a site survey.
Terry via email asks:
Hi Aunty, I hope you can help me. I am running a Toshiba Satellite laptop on Windows Vista Home. After installing the latest numerous Windows updates I now get a message on start up; “Error loading C:\Users\Terry\\AppData\Roaming\rdycx.dll” Whilst it does not give any trouble that I have noticed, I have to cancel the notice every time I start up.
Can you help to rid me of this annoying thing (No, not the computer)
Aunty Says:
I’m not sure to be honest Terry. I can’t find any reference to rdycx.dll so I’m wondering whether you have some spyware or virus on your machine. Have you run a complete scan with an updated AVG9, Superantispyware and Malwarebytes?
Jack via email asks:
Dear Aunty, I am having dreadful trouble printing pdf files. The graphics are beautiful but any text contained on or within the doc comes out as gobbldygook. I have an HP4000 series printer, and the latest version of Adobe reader 9.3. Can you help? I have reloaded the printer drivers from the supplied disk.
Aunty Says:
If everything else is printing OK Jack (i.e. Word or OpenOffice) then this is most likely a driver issue. Maybe try downloading the latest drivers from the HP website as the software on the disk is normally out of date before the printer leaves the factory.
Tony via email asks:
Hi Aunty. I use Windows XP and I have just downloaded and installed the latest Real Player 11 but it seems to have changed all my music and film files from my usual Windows Media Player. The icons are different and I used to be able to double click on a song or film and it automatically opened Media Player and played the song.
Aunty Says:
Yes I have covered this problem in the past Tony but I know it will keep coming up so I’ll go over it again. Quite often a newly installed program will take over certain file types and cause all sorts of headaches, but there is an easy way of changing this back to your favourite application. Double click on ‘my computer’ and choose ‘tools’ ‘folder options’ and the ‘file types’ tab. You can now scroll down the list until you see the entry for MP3 or WAV or AVI (this will differ depending on your music or film file type) highlight the file type and click on the ‘change’ button. From the next list of programs you can scroll down until you see Media Player and click ‘apply’ (you may need to tick the small box that says ‘always use the selected program to open this kind of file’) This process will work with any files and I’ve found jpg and doc files are amongst the most frequently hijacked by a newly installed program.
