Aunty Virus 31st May 2010

Sharron from Lo Crispin asks:
Dear Aunty, my computer is an Acer using XP and my problem is when emailing attachments like a news letter or document the receiver cannot open them or they simply don’t get there. I know I can send jpegs because I send pictures to my daughter, but why do I fail with files etc. If I am sent files then I cannot open them and these attachments are in different formats, can you tell me what I should save a document in so I can send in email?
Aunty Says:
Hi Sharron. This sounds like it could either be a security setting in your browser program or possibly your firewall. Probably the easiest way to test this it to download Google Chrome and try it for a few days. Chrome has more simple security features and will often tell you exactly why files cannot be downloaded or opened. If you send me some samples then I can look into it a bit more.

Morag via email asks:
Dear Aunty, I realise you are busy but have asked if there is any method of getting back emails which have mistakenly been deleted, particularly from 17 May to this week, but as yet have not heard from you. Some of the details are: It's an Acer Aspire 5630 using Internet Explorer and my mail server is hotmail.co.uk.  It would be greatly appreciated if you think there is an answer to my problem.
Aunty Says:
I’m not 100% sure about Hotmail Morag, but with my Gmail I can recover emails up to 30 days after I’ve deleted them. I think you have a ‘deleted’ folder on the left of your Hotmail window which should open a folder with all of your deleted emails. You should be able to tick any emails you want to recover and move them back into your Inbox using the drop down menu. Let me know how you get on.

Terry via email asks:
Dear Aunty, You have helped me in the past so hope you can this time. I took some pictures with my digital camera and downloaded them on my computer as usual. When I went to view them I found that prior to taking this last batch I must have moved the top selector on my camera to video. A few of these pictures are one off and can never be replaced. So my problem is how can I run off a still picture on my printer from a video on my computer? When I freeze the camera to look at the picture taken it comes up as a still photo. Therefore is there anyway to run off a still picture directly from the camera. I hope this is understandable and you are able to help me. Incidentally your article is the first page I turn to in my Round Town News.
Aunty Says:
Hi Terry. You may find a feature on your camera where you can extract single frames from video files but probably the best way would be to use a program on your PC, such as VLC Media Player which will let you freeze movies and take a snapshot to save or print. You can get it from www.download.com and it is free.

Ursula via email asks:
Hi aunty.  I had Norton 360 on my computer but as my subscription expired a few weeks ago, I didn’t wish to renew it so I uninstalled from my computer. When I went to get AVG free download every time I go through the setup process I get to the end (where it gives you a list of which one you want to uninstall) I don’t have the Norton icon because I have already uninstalled it. What should I do now to get the AVG free download?  Please help as I have no security on my computer
Aunty Says:
Hello Ursula. There is a special uninstall program for Norton 360 which you can download from the www.symantec.com website. If you use the search box and type in ‘uninstall 360’ you will see the download page. Failing this you could try one of the other free antivirus programs such as Avira or Avast.

Bill from La Marina asks:
Hi Aunty, Please help with following, the answer might interest others with similar problem. We are going to the UK for three months very early June and taking my laptop and I am aware that I can use a dongle to get onto the internet while there, so I expect to buy a new UK mobile plus dongle once we arrive. In Spain I use Telefonica for my landline telephone and their ADSL, plus Europa for cheap calls to the UK and elsewhere. The question is: what happens about an Internet Service Provider in the UK as I believe you have to pay one to get connected to the internet? Hopefully you might be able to email me an answer before next Saturday or have a reply in the RTN. Thanks in advance, keep up the good work.
Aunty Says:
Hi Bill. I have had very mixed response to the roaming USB Internet services so I would suggest signing up to a UK ISP (such as Vodafone) on a pay-as-you-go tariff which you can re-use whenever you are in the UK.
