Suddenly yesterday I could not and cannot still access any programs. I get an error message: Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item. I can still access files and folders but cannot go into any programms through the desktop or the start menu. The only way I can go online is through the help and support section. I have looked through a few forums and am more than confused. I have Windows Vista but it seems to happen in any operating system to other people. Any thoughts?

First thing CL is to start up in 'safe mode' (F8 key before windows starts) and run a complete scan with your antivirus and antispyware software. Let me know if this resolves it.

I gave in and took it to be looked at. He suggested the problem was that I had AVG and Zone alarm pro running together and that zone alarm had caused the problem. I didn´t like that programme anyway because we didn´t understand the warnings so I have removed it. I now just have AVG8 but while I am on, do we need another firewall or will windows be sufficient, do you think? I use Windows Vista by the way.
