How to get and send your email from a Gmail account into Outlook Express |
|
|
|
The
first step (and probably the most overlooked) is to make sure POP
access is turned on for your Gmail account. You first need to set up
your Gmail account (if you haven’t already got one) and login to the
main Gmail screen.
1. Choose ‘Settings’ from the top of the Gmail page and select the ‘Forwarding and POP/IMAP’ tab. 2.
Make sure either ‘Enable POP for all mail’ or ‘Enable POP only for mail
that arrives from now on is selected’ depending on whether you want
your existing gmails to be sent to Outlook. 3. Click Save Changes.
The
second and most tricky bit is done in OE (Outlook Express) itself. I’ve
written this in 2 parts so you can make a cup of tea and rinse your
brain out halfway through.
1. Start OE and from the menu select ‘tools’ ‘accounts’ 2. Click ‘add’ ‘mail’ and type your name. 3. Click ‘next’ and enter your Gmail address. 4. Click ‘next’ and make sure POP3 is selected under ‘My incoming mail server….. ‘ 5. Type "pop.gmail.com" under Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server:. 6. Type "smtp.gmail.com" under Outgoing mail (SMTP) server. 7. Click ‘next’ and type your full Gmail address under Account name:. 8. Enter your Gmail password under Password and click ‘next’ 9. Click Finish.
Part 2 is to do with changing the ‘ports’ Gmail uses.
1. From the same OE ‘tools’ ‘accounts’ window, highlight the newly created pop.gmail.com account and click Properties. 2. Go to the ‘servers’ tab and make sure ‘my server requires authentication’ is checked under Outgoing Mail Server. 3.
Go to the ‘advanced’ tab and make sure ‘this server requires a secure
connection (SSL)’ is checked under both Outgoing mail (SMTP) and
Incoming mail (POP3). 4.
Type "465" under Outgoing server (SMTP) and if the number under
Incoming server (POP3): has not automatically changed enter "995"
there. 5. Click OK and click Close.
That
should be it. It took us a few goes to get everything right but if you
take your time and do it step by step you should be OK. A good method
is to print this out and tick each operation as you do it. There is a
quick and easy print option in the top right of this page as well as an
email option should you wish to email this to someone. In the top left
is an easy PDF button - should you wish to save this as a PDF.
Good luck.
Any questions or queries please feel free to ask in the forum. Phil
