Aunty Virus 15th February 2012
Sam via email asks:
Hi Aunty. I am using Internet Explorer and have been using the ITV TV guide for a long time but last week I started to have a problem. Once into the TV guide, if you hover over a program it invites you to 'click for more information' but when I do this currently I get a box popping up saying 'A problem has occurred please wait 5 minutes or delete your cookies and try again.' I have tried both these options but get the same result. I have also tried using Firefox, same result and I have logged in under a different user but still the same result. I use AVG antivirus and a scan shows no problems. However if I use my wife's PC then it works fine. Any suggestions as to the problem and a fix?
Aunty Says:
Not too sure Sam but it sounds like you have something residing on your computer that is confusing the ITV website. The first thing to try is a cleanup with Ccleaner from www.download.com, followed by an update of Java from www.java.com. See how you get on with these and let me know.
Alastair via enetcomputers.net forum asks:
Hi Aunty. I have Dropbox on my main PC and the files are accessible from my iPad but I am unable to amend them at all on the iPad. Google advises that these files are read only and suggests removing that default on the Dropbox folder using Windows Explorer. I have done this with no effect even though I have applied and saved this change. Also, subsequently the read only option is restored in Explorer. I would be grateful for any advice. Perhaps a different Cloud program may be the answer? This is my first foray into ‘the cloud'.
Aunty says:
Hello Alistair. I do use Dropbox, but not on an iPad so I’m not 100% sure what it could be. Could it be that you are logging in as a different user from your iPad and therefore not inheriting the same security settings? Maybe try creating a test folder from the iPad and see if you can then access it from your PC.
Cliff via email asks:
I have bought a new tower so is it possible to link the old tower unit to it in order to access the programs thereon which I don’t have on the new one, i.e. Microsoft Access and Microsoft Picture It Photo 7.0? I assume it is not as straightforward as simply connecting the two via their USB ports.
Aunty Says:
You can connect two computers together via the USB port by using a special ‘bridged’ USB cable, but this will only allow you to transfer data such as photos and documents. You cannot run programs like Access or Word and for this you will need to install Office on the new computer. You can also connect the two using the Ethernet ports (the ones you normally use for your broadband connection) and this also needs a special ‘crossover’ cable.
Ellis from Algorfa asks:
Hello Aunty. I have a Mac book pro and would like to watch the BBC and ITV using Apple’s iPlayer. Can you recommend a reliable and safe proxy server to do this? I have tried to get iPlayer through "get iPlayer automater” but I get a message saying use a proxy server, any ideas please?
Aunty Says:
I get asked this a lot Ellis but I can’t recommend one that I can be sure is safe and reliable. Maybe some of our readers have tried and tested a UK based proxy server so let me know of any that work well.
Barry via email asks:
Hello Aunty. I see memory sticks & flash drive sticks for sale on various web sites, can you tell me what the difference is please?
Aunty Says:
Memory stick, USB pen drive and flash drive are all the same thing Barry. They vary in quality and capacity but I have always used the Japanese manufactured Kingston or Scandisk ones.
John via email asks:
Dear Aunty, I have recently replaced the ink cartridges in my printer and now every time I switch it on a test page is printed out obviously wasting ink. Can and how do I get rid of this please?
Aunty Says:
You can usually change this setting from ‘control panel’ ‘printers’ and right click on your printer icon and choose ‘properties and look for the test page section. Another way that often works is to put the test page back into the scanner and press the scan button on the printer. This is a one-off process designed to align and synchronise the scanner and will sometimes only go away once completed.
Ask Aunty all your qustions over in our forum.
