Tony via email asks:
Hi Aunty. I took your advice about changing to another browser to see if my problem disappeared so I installed Firefox and lo and behold I can now write comment on Facebook without missing letters! I then went back to using Internet Explorer to see if the problem with Facebook still existed and sure enough it was still there. Can you explain why I can write comments on Facebook via Firefox but not when using Internet Explorer? It is only Facebook that gives me the problem because I can type messages or comments on Yahoo, Hotmail and Gmail.
Aunty Says:
I wish I could explain Tony but these kind of problems can have many different and quite complicated causes. Websites have become more and more complex (especially interactive ones like FB) and they tend to need a number of different third party add-ons, such as Java, Flash Player and ActiveX, that can cause all kinds of strange problems. I suspect your problem is something to do with one of these programs not interacting properly with IE.
Bob from Calpe asks:
My problem is that every time I turn my computer on, after all the usual startup screens and the page saying ‘Please wait for ID Scan’, the next page then says: “CPU fan error Press F1 to resume”. I do this and all is well but should this really happen every time?
Aunty Says:
No this shouldn’t happen Bob, and it could indicate a faulty cooling fan or clogged up heatsink. If you are feeling brave you could pop the side of your computer off (usually the left) and have nose at the fan and the heatsink that the fan is screwed to and see if it is clean and that it spins okay. Other than that it’s a trip to your local repair shop for a check-up.
Meri from Torrevieja asks:
Hi Aunty. Can you help me please? Is there any way in which I can organize my memory stick into alphabetical order.
Aunty Says:
Hello Meri. Normally what I do to sort how my folders or files are displayed is to click on any of the column heading where you see ‘name’ ‘file size’ and ‘type’ etc. If you don’t see these columns then you need change the view option in Windows Explorer. Double click on ‘My Computer’ (or just ‘Computer’ in Vista and Win7) and double click on your memory stick icon. The window that pops up is called Windows Explorer (not to be confused with Internet Explorer) and is the default file management program that comes with Windows. In the top right corner you will find a small icon and drop down list that will allow you to change how you view your files and folders. Set this to ‘details’ and you should see the column headings.
Jack via email asks:
Hello Aunty, I intend selling my Dell laptop which no longer gets used, how best to clean it, before it departs my company? Great to read your column every week.
Aunty Says:
Probably the best way is to run the built in Dell factory recovery process, however not all laptops have this function so try it and see if it works. Dell normally use the Ctrl + the F11 key just as you switch the computer on which should give you a fairly self explanatory menu to follow. If you have Vista or Win7, and you are lucky enough to have a DVD, then you can normally run a factory restore if you boot to the DVD and choose the ‘repair’ option. If you let me know the exact model and version of Windows I can be a bit more specific.
Dave via email asks:
Hi Aunty, I read your article every week with interest and have found some answers very helpful. My problem is that when I’m surfing the web and I find a page that might be interesting to a friend, when I go to send on the page the page by email and link by email are greyed out. How do I solve this? Your advice would be most welcome.
Aunty Says: Hi Dave. I think I know what you mean and I’m guessing you are using Internet Explorer 9 and want to use the menu option that automatically pops a link to the page that you are on into an email ready to send. For this to work you need to be using a locally installed email client such as Outlook or the Windows Live program from Microsoft. Most of us have given up on local email programs and we all stick to what is commonly known as ‘webmail’ such as Gmail, Yahoomail or Hotmail. Your best bet would be to copy the URL (the complete http://www..... bit in the address bar) into an email and send it that way.
