Aunty Virus 7th June 2011
Terry via email asks:
Hi Aunty, I have a very annoying problem that has recently arisen. When I try to access a website, either from bookmarks/favorites, or by typing in the website address, I am continually being sent to a Yahoo page which starts off by saying "Sorry we couldn´t find the page you requested" and then gives a list of sites pertaining to, and usually including, the one I was trying to access. Sometimes it does this when, for example, I am on the home page of a newspaper and click on an article I want to read.
I don´t usually use Internet Explorer, but I´ve found it happens on there as well, although it doesn´t go to Yahoo, but a site which uses the phrase "Oops we couldn´t find this page" or words to that effect.
Aunty Says:
This sounds suspiciously like spyware or a virus Terry. What is probably happening is you have (or had) what is known as a ‘browser hijacker’ which is designed to send you off to an untrustworthy website. Try a full scan with an updated SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes and see what they find.
Maureen via email asks:
Hi Aunty. I have a laptop with Windows 7 installed and Google is set as my home page but it always comes through in Spanish. Another problem is when I try to access my Internet banking account I get so far and then I'm told the web page has expired and I could try pressing the refresh button on the tool bar to download a new web page. Problem is there is no refresh button anywhere. What can I do? I then reverted to my old computer with Windows 98 and again tried to access my Internet account, low and behold after a bit of a wait there it was all the information I needed. Trouble is I am loathe to use this computer because the anti virus has expired. I am having lots of problems with Windows 7 can you help me with this one.
Aunty Says:
If you set your home page to google.co.uk (or .ie) it should force it to come through in English. To refresh a webpage you can press the F5 key. It is a good idea to run the free Ccleaner (from www.enetcomputers.net) every now and again to help clear out old temporary internet files that can also cause this kind of problem.
John from Benidorm asks:
Hi Aunty, I'm on Yahoo Mail Beta but when I forward an email the recipient only receives a blank page. This has only happened since my address book seemed to be used by someone sending all my contacts' emails marked ‘no subject’ or ‘fwd’. Please help.
Aunty Says:
I’ve had a fair few emails about this problem John and there seem to be a number of different solutions so maybe one of these will work for you. Yahoo suggest updating Java (from www.sun.com) and make sure you have the latest version of your browser. As I suggested to Maureen, running Ccleaner to clear out any rubbish may also help. It may be worth trying another browser, such as Google’s Chrome or Mozilla’s Firefox and see if this resolves the problem. A lot of Yahoo users have dropped the Beta version until it is stable, so maybe go back to the older version.
Graham via email asks:
Dear Aunty. A little while ago I moved from Telefonica to Teletec for my ADSL and phone services and much to my surprise I'm getting better speeds than I do in England. I am using a D-Link ADSL2+ router here, and my speeds have increased from 1.7/1.9Mb to around 2.1/3.2Mb. As my speeds in England with Sky are about what I was getting with Telfonica before using the ADSL2+ router, I wonder if a simple change of router in England will increase my speeds similarly?
Aunty Says:
Difficult one to predict Graham. Certainly an old ADSL or ADSL2 router won't benefit from the newer and greatly improved ADSL2+ technology (the ‘+’ indicates double the download bandwidth), but your recent broadband speed increase may also be something to do with the exchange end of your connection. Your best bet with Sky is to tell them that “although you're happy with the service generally, you’re going to need to switch providers as your current speed simply isn’t enough”. Have some www.speedtest.net stats at hand, and as they don’t like losing customers you will probably find they will upgrade your router for free.
Michael via email asks:
Dear Aunty, Some time ago an engineer asked me to allow a program that is called ‘logmein’ so he could remotely diagnose my PC. The problem I have now is trying to remove it. I have Windows Vista and when I go to Control Panel I don't appear to have an Add/Remove icon. If I go to Computer and try to uninstall I get a message that says “Another version is already installed, to configure or remove the existing version use add/remove programs in control panel” Could you please guide me to the correct procedure as I am not happy about having this on my computer.
Aunty Says:
Hi Michael. Add & Remove programs is now under the ‘Programs and Features’ icon in control panel. Click once on the program in the list and choose ‘Uninstall/Change’. If this does not work then there are other ways, so let me know how you get on.
